New in Theaters: “Three Thousand Years of Longing”, the Horror Movie “The Invitation”, and the Hostage Thriller “Breaking”

1.  Three Thousand Years of Longing  (R)  Trailer

Tilda Swinton is a lonely scholar who releases a genie from its bottle while traveling abroad in Istanbul, and Idris Elba is the djinn who’s offering her three wishes.

Knowing that wishes never end well in the movies, she first interrogates him about his life as a genie.  Then they bond as he shares the tragic stories of heartbreak and betrayal that cursed him to his mystical prison.

It’s directed by George Miller, who did all four of the “Mad Max” movies, and the upcoming prequel / spin-off “Furiosa”.

2.  The Invitation  (PG-13)  Trailer

Nathalie Emmanuel from “Game of Thrones” stars in this “Dracula” inspired horror movie.  She plays an orphaned American artist who discovers through DNA-testing that she’s part of a wealthy British family with a sinister past.

After she connects with her long-lost family, she accepts an invitation to a lavish wedding in the English countryside where she must fight for her survival.  Thomas Doherty from the HBO Max “Gossip Girl” reboot is the villain.

(Your kids might also remember him as Captain Hook’s son in the “Descendants” movies.)

3.  Breaking  (PG-13)  Trailer

John Boyega from “Star Wars” plays an Iraq War veteran with PTSD who takes hostages at a bank and threatens to blow it up if he doesn’t get his disability check from the V.A.  It’s based on a true story.

The hostages include Nicole Beharie from “Sleepy Hollow” and Selenis Leyva from “Orange Is the New Black”.  And the police hostage negotiator is the late Michael K. Williams from “The Wire”, who died of an overdose last September.
