Jack "DAMN" Elliott
How did you get your start in radio?
My dad was a Chicago cop who, after being auditioned with 500 others, was given the job of the very first helicopter traffic reporter for WGN radio in Chicago. When I was 7 years old I would go along for his broadcasts and hang out at the station. When I was 9 years old my dad and the pilot were killed in a copter crash when the aircraft's top rotor blade malfunctioned and came loose from the craft. I always knew radio would be my future.
What is your favorite part about the job?
The uncertainty. Never knowing if next month's ratings will mean being fired.
Tell us a little about your personal life.
I wake-up about 4:15am everyday and get to the station by 5:15am. I prepare like a madman til we go on at 6:00am. Then it's non-stop phones, topics, questions, guests, those never ending contests that we all wish could go away forever, and my favorite part of the show: Soap Opera Moments. I try to leave the station by 11:00am...go to the gym for an hour and head home to work on the next day's show. I don't do naps. Naps don't work for me. I stay up til about 11:00pm... go to bed and start all over again the next day. By Friday I feel like a train hit me. Saturday and Sunday I sleep-in til about 7:45am. Also,I love cars. I usually have four or five at any given time. I probably would be a car wholesaler in another life. If you have been paying attention over the past 12 years you know I am on TV doing car commercials. For several years, in the 1980's, I did a TV show all about cars and the latest innovations in the auto industry etc. Cars have always somehow been part of my life. My wife is a TV advertising sales executive for KFOR News Channel 4. Our daughter, Brittany, plays tennis for the University of Oklahoma Sooner Ladies Tennis team, and is majoring in Broadcasting.
Tell us a crazy radio story.
Years ago while doing the afternoon drive shift (2p-6p) at KRIZ radio in Phoenix, the guy who followed me on the air (Rick "The Stick" Diamond) was in the main studio doing his show as always, in his boxer underwear and wearing orange sunglasses with all the lights turned out in the studio. I walked in to finish some paperwork and he said to me, "Hey man my leg is warm." I said, "Dude don't look at me." He and I rarely spoke. Most days I would be leaving the studio while he was entering and it was usually just, "Hey man." To which I would reply, "Hey". So this rare conversation was a first. I decided to glance down at his leg he claimed was so warm. I immediately discovered the trash can (sitting next to his left leg) had flames about two feet high shooting from the inside. Now I knew why his leg was warm. I screamed at him to give me the trash can. He did, and I ran it out the back door and dumped the contents and stomped out the flames. He had been smoking weed in the studio and discarded his nearly exterminated doobie in the trash can which was filled with newspapers. Brilliant. When I returned the trash can to the studio and told him what had happened, all he could say was, "Far out, man."
